✍️ What Julius Caesar Can Teach You About Writing Your Memoir

✍️ What Julius Caesar Can Teach You About Writing Your Memoir

You might not think you have much in common with Julius Caesar - but if you’ve ever wanted to shape how your story is remembered, you’re already following in his footsteps.

At Memoir Magpie, we believe everyone has stories worth telling. So in our latest (and very short!) video, we did something a little unusual:
🎙️ We sent a time-travelling reporter to 50 BCE to interview Caesar himself about what might be the first memoir ever written.

His Commentarii de Bello Gallico is no dry history. It’s personal, persuasive, and - let’s be honest - a little self-serving. Written in the third person to sound objective, it actually paints a very specific picture of Caesar as a brilliant, unstoppable leader. No Roman losses? 430,000 Gauls defeated? Really?

The truth is, even the earliest memoirs are crafted with intention. And that’s not a bad thing.

💡 Here’s what we can learn from Caesar:

  • Memoirs have always been about perspective, not just facts
  • Voice and style matter—so don’t be afraid to write with personality
  • Your story is yours to tell, but honesty builds trust
